JVR Landscape is a Calgary-based company now operating in its 38th year. The company is co-owned by John van Roessel (JVR), Tyler Strain and Andrew Heighton. We offer innovative design in landscape construction and tailor each job to ensure client satisfaction. The knowledge and expertise of the crew resulted in high-quality job excellence.
We struggled to find a concept that would work for our backyard as our lots was originally very sloped. John was able to find us a great solution that turned our backyard into a complete oasis.
The JVR team is very professional and reliable as well, and they ensure to go above and beyond. John has gone out of his way to find a very specific clematis for our garden that matches the theme that I asked for, and the JVR team also replaced some of the spots in our grass with new sod, which was a nice surprise when we came home one day.
We also enjoyed working with John because there were no surprises on our invoice at the end of our project, it was exactly what we were expecting. We would hire JVR again and our family members have begun to hire them as well, all with the exact same experience. Thank you to John and the JVR team – we love our backyard!
We hired JVR after admiring a project they did in our neighbourhood. Working with John, Andrew, Tye, Will and the crew was a pleasure from start to finish. They were professional, easy to communicate with and they completed our project with skill and knowledge. Thanks guys!
We started working with JVR in early 2015. It was a pleasure working with the entire team. Their management is second to none, and have a great crew to work with. We highly recommend JVR to any of our clients. We look forward to working with JVR in the future.
Kudos to everyone who had a part in the amazing transformation of my property from an eye sore to the neighborhood envy! The whole project, from 1st contact to completion was done in a surprisingly timely manner.
John and Andrew never winced at my many changes to the plan and I would get an amended copy the very next day! Will, the site Supervisor, kept me informed on the progress throughout the project and everyone on site seemed to know exactly what their job was for the day and wasted no time getting it done.
To sum it all up, all of the JVR Team were professional, pleasant and accommodating. A few of my neighbors also commented on this…so THANK YOU!
To top it all off, my final Bill was $3000 UNDER Budget!!! It doesn’t get any Better than That!
Many years ago, JVR constructed a back garden greeting the forest of Wildwood. Recently we finished the front with a new modern design. A rectilinear paving stone border with two lovely Ohio Buckeye trees helps accentuate the house and add depth to a long front yard.
The Italianate elegance of this house guided the style of landscape design. Rectangular slabs, straight hedges and a centrepiece wall create a private back terrace. Front stone walls hid a cozy entrance courtyard.
The perfect setting in the rolling foothills of Priddis inspired the natural landscape that provides the foreground for the amazing property. Rustic flagstone, steps and boulders work well with the house’s stone walls and complement the natural surroundings. A truly stunning result.
JVR Landscape has done many projects in 34 years of business. Here are some more photos of other jobs we have completed over the years.

Our clients on the Elbow River asked for a plant-heavy design and simple yet had something different than everyone else’s garden. Large Banas stone slabs were used to create the moats and small bridges. This vibrant landscape blooms from spring to fall.
This tranquil landscape manifested with the client’s request to create a simple landscape with a balance that utilizes principles from Asian design. The back patio extends the house, nestled against the fireplace with ease from the back door.
This beautiful cabin at Sylvan Lake is nestled into a hill. The landscaping wraps around the house with rundle pathways and patios, boulders, a creek bed, planting and oversized flagstone set in the lawn. At the end of the day, it is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy the beauty of the lake.
This unique ‘Falling Timbers’ Canmore house needs more curb appeal than most, as a street surrounds it on three sides. Simplicity was key in finishing the gardens and a beautiful opportunity to frame the great views.
Tea time is a must with two little girls, so this landscape needed to include a rock table for the girls to enjoy afternoon tea. Inspired by the green space behind the property, there is natural rundle rock, a creek bed and lots of native trembling aspen to complement the space. The mix of brown and black rundle creates a showy display of rock not seen on many projects.
Contemporary style, beautiful art and true outdoor living space bring this small yard to life. Buddha would have been happy to sit back and relax in this Zen paradise. A one-of-a-kind water wall adds a soft finish
This beautiful house had a blank slate for landscaping. Our job was trying to find the right balance between the traditional exterior of the house and the more modern landscape that the homeowner wanted. Rectilinear lines in the lawn and rustic walls helped us find the right combination.
This beautiful Canmore house was once the mine manager’s and was transformed into a retreat from the busy city life of Calgary. Like many of our projects, there have been many phases to this wonderful landscape, and the clients have been a blast to work with.
JVR has worked with the Bow Valley Ranche Historical Society allowing Calgarians to enjoy the past and the gifts of the land. JVR has been involved since 2005 in designing and constructing. Stay tuned for the “Listen??? Garden to be developed with guidance from elders from the Blackfoot nation.
We were honoured to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday by creating a garden design for Alberta’s legislature grounds. Landscape Alberta member volunteers then took on the task of building. The garden with the iconic maple leaf of stacked rundle stone features 150 Canadian Shield roses.
This project had all of the back lawn removed and a woodland garden designed to be enjoyed both from the deck above and from within. A tiered fountain and many colourful plants give anyone that enters the yard a feeling of peace.
Lush planting was the name of the game when it came to this landscape. The clients wanted a vibrant and cozy environment in this inner-city yard.
John and our crew have spent many hours helping these excellent gardeners attain their dream landscape over the past couple of decades. While the photos suggest a more favourable climate, it is a garden in Calgary. The project has evolved over the years with many additions.
The Raspberry Patch began on an undeveloped piece of land that transformed into a dream house and landscape. We were happy to help and see it all come to fruition.
